Every living thing you have ever eaten twists the same way. The amino acids in your food are left handed. The sugars are right handed. Fungi, whales, cactus, plankton, one handedness throughout, no exceptions that survive inspection. Biologists call the property chirality, and it is the oldest decision life ever made.
Chemists can make both kinds. Glassware does not care which way a molecule curls. Life chose at the root, four billion years ago, and never revisited, because folding only works when every part pulls from the same side. A mirrored protein meets your enzymes the way a left hand meets a right glove. Shape matches. Nothing connects.
That glove rule runs deeper than trivia. It is the reason biology has doors at all. Every enzyme, every poison, every immune memory works by matching shape to a standard twist. Change the twist and nothing in four hundred million years of vertebrate defense can grip you.
Labs already build pieces of the other side. Mirror DNA strands. Mirror enzymes. Drug designers pursue reflected molecules deliberately, because our digestive machinery cannot chew them and they last in the body untouched. And nature cheats too. Bacteria lace their biofilms with right handed amino acids, opposite of what their own proteins use, specifically to dissolve old walls and slip out of antibiotic reach. Both sides of the fence already play with both hands.
The step past all of that is an organism built entirely from reflected parts, or better, an organism carrying both sets. Now imagine hunting it. Your enzymes arrive, lock onto its standard face, and mid attack the target presents the mirror instead. Weapons pass through twice. Immune memory trained on one geometry misses the other completely. Fighting such a thing means striking at a picture that changes with your angle of view, one surface holding two images, neither one lying.
It gets stranger when two chemistries share a planet. They cannot fight each other. Poison brewed on one side is flavourless water across the line. Blades, claws, venoms, infections, all require matching hands, so violence between the two biospheres is physically impossible and peace between them is total indifference. Walk through the parallel forest and nothing bites you, nothing infects you, nothing can digest you even after you fall. A traveller who dies there lies preserved in alien soil forever. The first true ghosts would be ours, wandering woods where our chemistry means nothing.
In December 2024 a report appeared in Science under thirty eight names asking the world not to build mirror bacteria. Voluntarily. Indefinitely. Working scientists requested a permanent pause on an organism that does not exist, because no predator hunts it, no phage grips it, and nobody knows what stops it if it walks outside.
But underneath the alarm sits the actual discovery, and it is bigger than danger. Why did life choose one twist? Because whichever hand got ahead began catalysing itself, and the race froze solid at the root. Which means existence begins as symmetry breaking. To be a specific thing, chemistry must refuse neutrality. A molecule willing to be either is nothing at all. Every identity in this universe starts as a prejudice held against infinity, proteins first, then people, then nations, each one a shape that stopped apologising for excluding every other shape.
The first tree grew wild from that choice. The second gets planted.
And everyone who lives in either tree will carry the same inheritance. To exist is to have chosen.
